The prize money for the VOBIS Gold Carat at Moonee Valley has prompted trainer Robbie Griffiths to give Charlie Garcon his chance in the lucrative race.
Charlie Garcon broke his maiden at Sale on December 24 at his fourth start and is one of 13 three-year-olds paid up for Saturday's $150,000 event open to VOBIS Gold qualified horses.
Griffiths thought Charlie Garcon did a good job to win a 1000m maiden second-up and said he would appreciate the step up to 1200m.
But he acknowledges it's a big step up in class.
"It's up in grade but the carrot is too big to not at least have a crack at it," Griffiths said.
"If it wasn't such a big carrot I probably would have been going on a more low-key approach and letting him season himself up in lesser races.
"Because it's worth so much money and he's eligible for the bonuses, we may as well have a crack at it and try our luck.
"If all the pre-race indicators are good we'll go there and see how we go."
Griffiths said the question mark is whether Charlie Garcon is mature enough to mix it with some of his rivals at Moonee Valley, with the field including stakes winner Antelucan from the Godolphin stable and the Clinton McDonald-trained filly Love Days who is unbeaten in two starts.
"He's shown enough talent. The question is whether the talent is going to come to fruition on Saturday," Griffiths said.
"This race does have a lot of depth to it though. The horse of John O'Shea's (Antelucan) is well-suited. The unbeaten filly looks a star, Love Days, and that's just two of several.
"It's a bit of a tough call on paper but you don't know if you don't have a crack, and he's been around the track before which is a plus."
Charlie Garcon raced at Moonee Valley at his second start in July when on a heavy track, nine lengths behind subsequent stakes winning filly Petits Filous.
Love Days is the $1.90 favourite ahead of Antelucan ($5.50) with Charlie Garcon, to be ridden by Dwayne Dunn, at $19.
