Hieroglyphics to take the next step

Friday 1 January 2016, 12:39pm

Hieroglyphics has finished less than a length from the winner at her past three starts and trainer Anthony Cummings believes it's her turn to shine again at Rosehill.

Cummings scratched her from the Canterbury midweek meeting to run in Saturday's tab.com.au sprint (1200m).

The mare has had four starts off a long break for a win over Festivity at Canterbury followed by two seconds and a close-up fifth.

Two starts ago, Hieroglyphics was runner-up to Bachman who franked his form with victory in last Saturday's Goldmarket Handicap at the Gold Coast.

"I think she is a mare that can go to stakes level," Cummings said.

"Everything in the races she's been in seems to have won again.

"She is up to Saturday class now and I think she has proved that."

Hieroglyphics is the second favourite behind the Joe Pride-trained Paceman, second to the well-performed Start Wondering at Rosehill two weeks ago.

Wide Acclaim is another whose trainer is looking to bigger and better things.

The Gary Portelli-trained three-year-old has been backed from $12 to $8 to win the 1100m benchmark 68.

"He's a really nice horse. He was unlucky last start and is ready to run well and we'll get a guide where we're going with him," Portelli said.

The trainer will also get a guide on Group One placegetter Sebring Sun who will have a searching gallop on Saturday morning to confirm his place in the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast a week later.

Sebring Sun put in a career-worst performance when last in the Canterbury Classic on Boxing Day.

With rain on the day, the race was run on a soft 6-rated surface.

"Brenton Avdulla didn't knock him around in the last part of the race," Portelli said.

"But he said he just couldn't go on the surface so he'll have a gallop before we decide to put him on the float."

Avdulla will also be aboard Wide Acclaim.
