Pegapus wins first Brisbane race of year

Friday 1 January 2016, 2:55pm

Punters got off to a bad 2016 at Doomben when rank outsider Pegapus won the first race of the year.

Pegapus ($71) gave leading jockey James Orman the first leg of an early double when he beat the favourite One Golden Day ($2) by a 1-3/4 lengths in the Glenlogan Park Two Year Old (1100m).

A $20,000 buy at the Magic Millions sale, the Scott Morrisey-trained Pegapus had run second last on debut at the Gold Coast three weeks ago.

The win lifts her prize money to $12,800 but it will not be enough for her to make the Magic Millions Classic field on Saturday week.

Pegapus was originally fourth emergency for the race but got a start when several runners were scratched in favour of running at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Orman said there had been no fluke about the win because Pegapus was forced to race deep.

The star apprentice made it five wins in the past three days when Mandryka ($2.40) won the Girls Day Out Plate (2200m).

Trainer Steve Tregea had hoped to run Mandryka at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday but he was only an emergency there.

"I decided to make certain he got a start and run today," Tregea said.

"I have always thought he would make a good stayer."

"The only problem is once you get to 2200 metres in Brisbane you can't go any further. I might have to freshen him up for something a bit shorter."
