Apprentice Andrew Adkins has made a dream start to the year with a winning double at Randwick.

From Port Macquarie, the 18-year-old has only been in Sydney for a few weeks but has already made a big impression.

Adkins rode the David Pfieffer-trained Chestnut Road to win on Friday before steering All Cerise to victory for premier trainer Chris Waller.

"Just riding here is a thrill" Adkins said.

"And to be able to get rides for trainers like Chris Waller and to ride a double at Randwick is a massive thrill."

Adkins admitted he was hesitant to move to the city so soon, but was lured by an offer he couldn't refuse.

"I wasn't looking to move but when Ron Quinton gave me a call and asked me to come to Sydney to be apprenticed to him, I couldn't say no," he said.

Waller said the youngster had the talent to go a long way.

"He is vey talented. He rides well and he presents well which is all important in this game," he said.
