Mallyon makes use of extended claim

Friday 1 January 2016, 6:10pm

Katelyn Mallyon has made the most of a rule allowing her to continue to claim despite having ridden the allowed number of winners.

The 21-year-old rode her 80th winner at Sandown on Wednesday aboard the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Miss Cooper, joining Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne as the only female to outride her claim in Melbourne.

Because acceptances for Friday's Flemington meeting and Saturday's Moonee Valley closed before Miss Cooper's win, Mallyon is able to use her 1.5kg at both meetings.

Mallyon didn't claim aboard Want To Rock in the New Year Plate as it was a non-claiming race but she used her claim to advantage on Magna Rossa in the Nouvelle Star Handicap, giving her a double for Ellerton and Zahra.

"It was a bonus getting the one-and-a-half (kilograms) off today," Ellerton said following Magna Rossa's win.

"She rode that winner on Wednesday and she did a lot of work on the two-year-old that won earlier and she's done a bit of work on this one too.

"She's getting just rewards for all her hard work."

Mallyon entered the Flemington meeting relaxed after her milestone win at Sandown knowing she had a good book of rides.

"I came into today with no pressure which is nice," she said.

"I'm lucky Matty and Simon give me zero pressure, so it's nice riding for the bosses."

Mallyon rode the first two of Ellerton and Zahra's four Flemington winners with Damian Lane aboard subsequent victors Rough Justice and Durendal.

On Saturday, she rides Pin Your Hopes for Ellerton and Zahra and Sagacious Miss for Ciaron Maher, a scratching from Flemington on Friday.
