'Jigger' discovery prompts stipes' inquiry

Thursday 4 February 2016, 5:38pm

An electrical device found at the Geelong racecourse has sparked a stewards' investigation.

Commonly referred to as a jigger, the device gives a horse an electrical shock in the hope it will improve performance.

"We can confirm that Racing Victoria stewards are conducting an investigation into the circumstances that led to a hand-held battery device being discovered on a training track at Geelong Racecourse during December 2015," RV spokesperson Breanna Gallagher said.

"That investigation remains ongoing and thus we do not intend to comment on the specifics further at this time."

Trackwork rider Damien Bradbury was disqualified for 18 months after stewards allege he had a jigger in his possession at Mornington last year.

Trainer Paul Presker and jockey Holly McKechnie were given hefty penalties in 2007 over the possession of an electrical device during trackwork at Horsham.
