Matt Dunn backs apprentrice Jim Orman

Sunday 10 April 2016, 10:16am

Apprentice James Orman will have some extra firepower from the in-form Matt Dunn stable in his battle with Jim Byrne for the Brisbane jockeys' title.

The two riders are set to fight it out over the remaining months of the season.

At one stage Orman was almost 20 winners in front of Byrne, the reigning champion, but the senior jockey has made his move in the past three months and a treble at Doomben on Saturday has moved him to 54, one winner behind Orman.

Byrne showed how determined he was to win back to back titles by riding with an injured knee on Saturday.

"I worked hard to get it right after a horse stood on me on Tuesday. It was all worthwhile with three wins and a nose second," Byrne said.

However, Orman got some good news after winning on Caillebotte for Dunn.

"I will be using Jim more. He has had two rides for me this week and won on them both," Dunn said.

"He is a very good young jockey who can get his horses into the right positions."

The Dunn stable is in form with two metropolitan trebles in the past week.

"Things are starting to go our way after a few setbacks," Dunn said.

The fact Orman leads both the metropolitan and state premierships (with 116 winners) is testament to his skill as the Gatton-based apprentice has not had the backing of a major stable.

He is indentured to his mother Caroline Allardyce.

"I am starting to get more rides for the big stables which is a help in the premiership race," Orman said.
