Like A Carousel bound for Flemington Hcp

Tuesday 3 May 2016, 4:13pm

Having already contested two 3200m races this campaign, Like A Carousel is on track to start in another marathon.

The Ken Keys-trained gelding is heading to Flemington on Saturday for a 2800m handicap ahead of a planned Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) start at the same track two weeks later.

"We debated whether to run on Saturday or go straight to the Andrew Ramsden Stakes," Keys said.

"But we've decided to run."

Like A Carousel has only won two of his 37 starts but has earned more than $450,000 prize money.

The stayer has raced eight times in 3200m races during his career including finishing runner-up in two Sandown Cups and third in last year's Group One Sydney Cup as a $151 outsider.

"You would think he's due for one, wouldn't you," Keys said, hoping a win at the distance might come in this month's Listed Andrew Ramsden.

Like A Carousel finished just better than midfield in the Adelaide Cup (3200m) two starts ago before venturing to Sydney where he ground away to finish sixth in the Sydney Cup after racing near the speed.

"It was probably as good as he could go. It was a high-quality field and he ran sixth. That's pretty good," Keys said.

Keys said Michael Walker will take the ride on Saturday.

Walker is returning having been on the sidelines for a month after suffering bleeding on the brain in an accident at his home.

There are 18 nominations for Saturday's race with Like A Carousel having 58kg.

Keys also has four-year-old Fair And Equitable nominated for two Flemington races but is instead planning to run the mare in Saturday's Group Two Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) in Adelaide to chase black-type.

Fair And Equitable won first-up this campaign at Cranbourne before heading to town where she was fifth to Mefnooda over 1440m at Caulfield.

"She missed the kick a little bit last start but got to the line well and it was probably a race that she needed to have," Keys said.

"Hopefully the mile will be suitable.

"I think she deserves to have a crack at it."
