Wicked Intent poised for Doomben back-up

Thursday 19 May 2016, 2:39pm

Top Brisbane three-year-old Wicked Intent has been switched to open stakes company to avoid big weights.

Trainer Chris Munce planned to target the Queensland Lightning at Eagle Farm on June 4 but has instead entered Wicked Intent for the Listed Chief De Beers Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

Wicked Intent was second in a three-year-old race last Saturday carrying 58.5kg and gave the winner Divine Centuri 3kg.

The gelding has 55kg in the Chief De Beers after weights were raised 1kg.

Munce said he realised Wicked Intent's record of five wins meant he had earned his big weights.

"He showed he was up to open company when he won first-up," Munce said.

"I will decide finally on Friday afternoon or Saturday if he will run in the Chief de Beers but at this stage he will.

"I can still have him in the Queensland Lighting or there are a couple of 1200-metre races around for him."

Munce is wary of the Bjorn Baker-trained Selita who won four races in a row before being beaten on a soft track at Randwick in early February.

Selita, a mare owned by a Darby Racing syndicate, has since won barrier trials at Wyong and Kembla Grange.

Baker will also have favourite Imposing Lass in the Doomben Roses and other top chances Coolring (BRC Sprint) and Baltic Whisper (Hampden Stakes) on Saturday.

"It has been a good start to the carnival and we have a strong team again on Saturday," Baker said.
