Rory Hutchings heads to Canterbury for his final day as an apprentice hoping to consolidate his lead in Sydney's junior premiership.
Hutchings rode three winners at Randwick on Saturday to take his tally to 32 and has five scheduled rides on Monday, four for his boss Chris Waller and one for Paul Perry.
He is 14 wins ahead of Koby Jennings in the race for apprentices' title with the latter mounting a late charge with six winners over the past two Saturday meetings.
The two are Sydney's heaviest apprentices with both on a 56kg minimum riding weight but Hutchings hopes to reduce that.
"I hope to get that down to 55-1/2 but I am doing it gradually," Hutchings said.
"It makes the job easier riding for Chris but I hope I can get more rides outside the stable and I'm looking forward to the transition to senior rider."
Jennings has a few months to go with his apprenticeship but is not daring to think about catching his rival in the final few weeks of the season.
"It's a big mission," he said.
"I never thought I'd be sitting second on a Sydney premiership.
"Just to get this far is a big thing."
Jennings celebrated his first stakes win on Saturday aboard the Kris Lees-trained Danish Twist in the Listed June Stakes.
He has been booked for three rides at Canterbury.
Reigning premier apprentice Winona Costin is sidelined by injury after a trackwork accident and sits on 16 wins.
