Little goes chasing bigger Valley prize

Monday 13 June 2016, 4:18pm

Time is running out for lightly raced Powerful Story to take full advantage of her prize money opportunities.

That's one of the reasons trainer Colin Little has elected to bypass a race at Mornington on Monday in favour of a 1000m-race for three-year-old fillies at Moonee Valley.

Saturday's Moonee Valley event is worth double that of the Mornington race and also has a $23,000 Super VOBIS bonus attached.

"She's a three-year-old filly that we missed her two-year-old year with and most of her three-year-old career," Little said.

"And time is running out with her Super VOBIS time.

"She ran through a fence and severed a ligament in front of her hind leg as a younger horse.

"It's amazing how they can put a plaster cast on them, put them in a box and they come good."

Powerful Story was also entered for a 1200m three-year-old race against the colts and geldings.

While he would prefer to run Powerful Story over 1200m, Little said the 1000m-race against her own sex looked the softer option.

He is also concerned about the track condition at Moonee Valley which will hold its first meeting since March.

Powerful Story's debut third on soft ground at Cranbourne in May was followed with a win and a minor placing on the synthetic track at Pakenham at her two subsequent outings.

"Her first run in a race she was a little iffy at Cranbourne on a (soft) six and she ducked and dived a bit," Little said.

"Her runs since have been on the synthetic, so it's hard to know if she'll get through it."

Little said Michael Dee would ride the filly.

Dee rode Powerful Story at her first start at Cranbourne with Luke Currie taking over at her subsequent outings.

"Luke Currie can't make the weight so Michael Dee will ride her at 52-1/2 and I just hope they go hard, as they can do," Little said.
