One-two finish for Waller in Spear Chief

Saturday 25 June 2016, 12:37pm

A change of scenery helped to coax imported gelding Tales Of Grimm back into the winning list in the Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Trainer Chris Waller believed switching Tales Of Grimm interstate contributed to the gelding scoring his first win since the 2015 Scone Cup.

"It definitely helps to switch the older horses back on when you give them a trip away," Waller said.

"Overwork them and they don't perform but if you keep them fresh like this horse they can often find their best form."

Waller doesn't have any firms plans for Tales Of Grimm but has kept alive the option of extending his Queensland campaign.

"He's a one-race-at-a-time horse but if there's another suitable race here in three weeks time we might look at running him again up," he said.

"He's a nice miler, Cup-type of horse and it's just a matter of finding the right races for a horse like him."

Waller completed a one-two result in the Spear Chief when Tales Of Grimm ($8) held off stablemate Amovatio ($4.40) to win by three-quarters of a length.

Jockey Damian Browne said Hopfgarten, the $2.20 favourite who finished fifth, was unable to cope with carrying topweight of 60.5kg.

"He wasn't able to quicken under the weight when I asked him for an effort in the straight," Browne said.

Blinkers worked wonders for Miss Kindilan who will be spelled by trainer Barry Lockwood after winning the Singapore Airlines Plate.

"Everything that could go wrong did go wrong last start at the Gold Coast but it was good to see her win like that today," Lockwood said.
