Ben Thompson brings up race-to-race double

Saturday 25 June 2016, 2:29pm

Ben Thompson has edged out fellow apprentice Michael Dee in consecutive races at Flemington to add to a flurry of city winners for the young rider.

After Dee took out the opening race at Saturday's meeting aboard Godolphin colt Trenchant, his mounts loomed strongly in the following two races only to be edged out by horses ridden by Thompson.

Thompson guided Iggimacool to a half-length win over favourite Telopea in the Central Region Handicap before adding his second win from the first three races when Pin Your Hopes scored in a head-bobbing finish to the Gippsland Region Handicap.

Pin Your Hopes ($8) defeated the Ciaron Maher-trained Name The Day, ridden by Dee, by a short-half head after a good battle to the line.

"I thought Ciaron's horse had my measure," Thompson said.

"I thought it probably put a neck on me at the 300-metre mark but he (Pin Your Hopes) was really in for the fight. He pinned his ears back."

The victory was Thompson's 18th metropolitan win for the season with 10 of those coming this month.

"It's my fourth metro double for the month and I hadn't had one until June," Thompson said.
