Tivaci gets another shot at a Guineas win

Monday 27 June 2016, 6:28pm

Melbourne colt Tivaci will get another chance at a Guineas win when he steps out at the Sunshine Coast.

The Mike Moroney-trained Tivaci has shown talent this season, winning the Group Three C S Hayes Stakes at Flemington on protest, but will be chasing his first Guineas success from four attempts.

He finished unplaced in the Group One Australian Guineas, the Group Two Queensland Guineas and Listed Bendigo Guineas.

Moroney has always held Tivaci in high regard and is convinced he has the talent required for a race like Saturday's Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

"I've always thought he has got Group One ability," Moroney said.

He said his performance on Saturday could determine whether Tivaci is kept as a colt or be gelded for next season.

The Guineas will be Tivaci's third start in Queensland this preparation after his fourth in the Fred Best Classic (1350m) and sixth in the Queensland Guineas (1600m).

"He really hasn't had a lot of luck up here," Moroney said.

"He probably came down the worst part of the ground (along the fence) in the Guineas."

Moroney said Damian Browne had to stop and straighten Tivaci early in the race which contributed to where he was in the run before he finished two lengths from the winner Tsaritsa.

"He has got back in both his starts and run home strongly. They've both been good runs, he just hasn't had a lot of luck," he said.

Browne, who won the Group One Tattersall's Tiara on Saturday on Miss Cover Girl, sticks with Tivaci at the Sunshine Coast.

Moroney has flown to Queensland to watch the colt work on Tuesday morning and again on Thursday.
