Leading Sydney jockey James McDonald has ridden another winner in England, steering Nile Empress to a comfortable win in a two-year-old maiden.

McDonald rode possible Melbourne Cup contender Antiquarium to win last month's Northumberland Plate and was pleased to win in slightly less glamorous surroundings at Yarmouth.

"Everything went really well. It was good to ride a winner for (trainer) Hugo Palmer and hopefully it won't be the last," McDonald said.

"The track is bit like the tracks at home. It is flat and easy to ride."

McDonald is Godolphin's retained rider in Australia and is in England for a stint during the southern hemisphere winter.

He has four scheduled rides for Antiquarium's trainer Charlie Appleby on the opening day of the July festival at Newmarket on Thursday (Friday AEST).

McDonald retains a seemingly unassailable 25-win lead over Hugh Bowman in the Sydney premiership with seven meetings left this season.
