Tassie racing boss to take over in Qld

Friday 8 July 2016, 11:04am

Tas Racing boss Eliot Forbes has been appointed the new CEO of Racing Queensland.

The equine veterinarian surgeon, who has headed Tas Racing for about four years, will be in charge of all three racing codes and takes over at a time when greyhound racing is under scrutiny because of animal cruelty.

Queensland Racing Minister Grace Grace announced Dr Forbes' appointment on Friday and said his experience included holding senior positions in the United Arab Emirates racing industry.

His appointment comes about 12 months after the previous boss of Racing Queensland departed following a live baiting scandal in greyhound racing.

Five Queensland greyhound trainers were, in March, warned off tracks for life and banned from betting, training or owning a registered animal as a result of the live baiting expose by ABC's Four Corners.

Ms Grace has guaranteed the future of greyhound racing in Queensland which will come under the watchful eye of Dr Forbes who will take up his position on August 22.

"Since the greyhound live baiting scandal of 2015 Queensland has led the way nationally in its response to animal welfare and integrity issues in racing," she said.

"I'm very optimistic about the future of racing in Queensland and the outstanding line-up of talent we now have in place to lead this great industry."

Dr Forbes, who hails from the Sunshine State, is credited with substantially increasing the wagering turnover in Tasmania.

"He has exactly what it takes to lead the Queensland racing industry into a new era," Ms Grace said.

Dr Forbes was the chief vet for the world's richest race, the Dubai World Cup.
