QUOTES

"I take full responsibility for the campaign as a leader should, and I do." - Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday following the poorer than expected showing at Saturday's election.

"It's a pre-emptive message to the Australian community that Labor has its act together." - Newly elected MP Linda Burney on Bill Shorten being the only candidate for the renomination of the Labor leadership in a special caucus meeting on Friday.

"It's not happening, not interested in halal, thank you." - Pauline Hanson following NSW senator Sam Dastyari's invitation to share a Halal snack pack.

"People shouldn't start slitting their throats." - Former Prime Minister John Howard withholding his judgment during the electoral vote counting.

"I do so with no great enthusiasm." - Independent MP Bob Katter after announcing he will support the Turnbull government in the event of a hung parliament.

"In response to widespread illegal and unconscionable activity, including the slaughtering of tens of thousands of dogs, I can today announce that NSW is putting an end to greyhound racing." - NSW Premier Mike Baird after the state government reviewed an 800-page report on widespread cruelty in the greyhound industry.

"It's probably a reason why having a state take a unilateral decision like this without any reference to or consultation with other state government's is such a difficult thing for other states and territories." - Racing Minister Martin Pakula following NSW's decision to ban greyhound racing in the state.

"I am a loving father. My heart is breaking. I want to see my kids." - Bassam Raad after he allegedly murdered his wife and assaulted his three children.

"You're riding a jet ski on a main road. It's not everyday you do that." - Victorian farmer Mick Morrison, who rode a jetski on fast-moving floodwaters to save a dad and his two young girls.

"For me, a country girl, a coal miner's daughter, to become the second cyclist in history to be flag bearer for this country leaves me very emotional and proud." - Cyclist Anna Meares after she was chosen to carry the Australian flag for the Olympics' opening ceremony in Rio on August 5.

"I didn't ask for an eight-week campaign, but it gave me eight weeks of equal billing to talk about our plans." - Opposition leader Bill Shorten after the marathon campaign run ended following the double-dissolution called by Turnbull.

ODDITIES

+ If you're visiting monuments and national landmarks in the US this summer, don't be surprised if you see fitness groups using those steep stone steps for workouts.

Exercise buffs are getting together for group workouts in places like the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, the "Rocky" steps in Philadelphia, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver.

Some of the groups are part of a network of free workout clubs in 20 cities called the November Project. But individuals and other groups are using historic sites and stadiums, too.

Other sites where you may spot people working out, especially in the early morning include the flights of stairs at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Massachusetts; New York City's Gracie Mansion; and the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum in Canton, Ohio.

+ Someone stole a car from a South Carolina home but later returned it, police said.

Investigators told media outlets that a burglar broke into a house in Conway on Wednesday and stole a set of keys for the car, then came back late on Thursday or early on Friday and took the vehicle.

Police are not sure how long the burglar kept the car, but it was returned to the home sometime over the weekend.

Investigators said a surveillance camera captured a picture of the suspect taking the car. No arrests have been made.

The number of attacks by dogs on UK postal workers remains "unacceptable", with over a third of incidents happening at the front door, a new report shows.

Around seven attacks a day are being reported, a fall of 10 per cent over the past year. Incidents usually increase during the summer holidays when dogs are more likely to be in the garden.

The Royal Mail launched its annual Dog Awareness Week with a survey showing that one in four dog owners admitted they had left their pet loose in the house when a front door was open.
