Weir expected to claim new mark at MV

Wednesday 13 July 2016, 8:07am

Bookmakers are expecting Darren Weir to claim a new Australian training record when he saddles three early favourites at Moonee Valley.

On Tuesday, Weir drew level with John Hawkes after preparing his 334th winner of the season when Haski won the opening race at Murtoa.

Hawkes trained 334 winners during the 2002/03 season and Weir has heads to Moonee Valley on Wednesday with the target in his sights.

Among his chances are Streets Of Liberty, Hotel Sierra and Gun Case, all pre-post favourites in their respective races.

Weir has had a stellar season claiming six Group One victories for the year, including the Melbourne Cup with Prince Of Penzance.

He also cracked the 100 winner mark in the Melbourne metropolitan area for the first time when he trained a treble at Flemington last Saturday.

With 101 wins for the year, Weir is still 14 shy of Lee Freedman's record tally of 2005/06 with seven meetings remaining.

While Weir has the Melbourne trainers' premiership all wrapped up, the jockeys' and apprentices' titles are still wide open.

Dwayne Dunn holds a one win lead over Craig Williams in the jockeys' race.

Williams has a full book while Dunn has rides in seven of the nine races at the Valley.

Dylan Dunn, the son of Dwayne Dunn, leads Michael Dee by three in the apprentices' premiership.
