Blinkers to help Trubia at Eagle Farm

Thursday 14 July 2016, 11:23am

Jockey Michael Cahill has convinced trainer Michael Lakey to put blinkers on Trubia for his next Eagle Farm assignment.

Trubia will be having his last start for the winter when he takes on a handy field in Saturday's Caltex Open (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

However, the gelding has been racing in much better company having had his past three starts in Group or Listed races and has been far from disgraced.

Lakey said things hadn't gone Trubia's way during the winter after he won first-up at Toowoomba in April.

"It has just been a combination of things - bad barriers, the way races have been run, getting in the wrong part of the track, etc," Lakey said.

"This will be his last run before a break but I think he is well in here with only a half kilo over the limit."

Lakey said he added blinkers to Trubia's gear for Saturday at the suggestion of Cahill who has won three races on Trubia.

"Michael has been at me to put blinkers on him since last campaign. We will give a go this Saturday and see what happens," he said.

Trubia is likely to have a relatively short break before coming back into work for the open company feature races in the summer.

"He is a big gross horse and he stacks the weight on. But at this stage the summer looks nice for him and we might even try him at 1600 metres," Lakey added.
