Bayliss receives another suspension

Saturday 30 July 2016, 6:32pm

Apprentice Regan Bayliss has felt the wrath of stewards for the seventh time this year after being suspended at Caulfield.

Bayliss was outed for 12 meetings on a careless riding charge aboard pick-up ride Celeritas in the Debra Coombs Handicap on Saturday.

Racing Victoria stewards allege Bayliss shifted out at the 250m mark, causing the Ben Allen ridden My Sister Lil to be checked.

Chief steward Terry Bailey said Bayliss's record of seven suspensions this calendar, combined with a not guilty plea, had counted against him.

"The penalties don't come down if you keep getting suspended," Bailey said.

Bayliss can return for the Caulfield meeting on August 13.

Ben Melham was fined $500 for using his mobile phone in the jockeys room during the meeting.

Melham explained he was inquiring via a text message into the health his son who had an attack of croup on Friday night and his wife who had fainted.

"I should have brought in, but I was worried about them," Melham said.

Bailey said it was a breach of the rules but stewards would have been happy to work in with him.

"We understand the personal circumstances," Bailey said.

"But it can breed sinister things if we're not told about it."

Earlier in the day, Allen's inexperience saved him from an improper riding charge aboard Scherzoso in the VOBIS Gold Stayers.

Craig Williams on Bondeiger had established a position one off the fence as Allen was trying to get in from a three wide position.

"In the last couple of years we have taken a dim view of riders forcing the issue over a period of time," Bailey said.

"If you were a senior or a non-claimer you would be facing a charge."
