Home-track trainer Luke Oliver had a prolific day at Caulfield on Saturday, with his two runners Khutulun and Conspicuous Maid impressing.
After Khutulun claimed the Carol Kelly Plate (2000m), the ever-consistent Conspicuous Maid just about looked the winner late in the John Skewes Handicap (1200m) before running second behind Blithe Belle.
Khutulun, bought by Grand Syndicates for just $16,000 back in 2012, took her stakes beyond $360,000 with a dominant win under the hold of Rising Stars series winner Beau Mertens.
Oliver said Khutulun, who has now won just twice in the best part of 21 months, backed up brilliantly from just missing the judge at Flemington last week.
"At the start of this prep, I said to the owners, 'It's probably the right time of year to get her back up in trip'," the Caulfield trainer said.
"We'd been struggling in the dry months to keep her sound and get her back up to the 2000m.
"The way she came through her first-up run I thought we'd get her back up to 2000m - I think that's her best chance of winning these sorts of races.
"Brilliant ride by Beauy, he followed instructions perfectly and she was too good.
"She was keen-ish in the run, but he made the perfect decision to follow that one into the race because it was clearly going to take him right there.
"He sat quietly; it was a great ride and great result for the owners."
Oliver said he'll likely step out Khutulun again over 10 furlongs, capitalising on the softer tracks on offer.
