The new racing season is barely a week old and already Darren Weir is notching up the winners.
The premier Melbourne trainer's five-winner haul on Saturday was his best in the metropolitan area.
Weir also claimed the day's feature, the Group Three Aurie's Star Handicap with Sooboog before notching another feature on Sunday at Sandown, the Grand National Hurdle with Zanteco.
Already this season has 17 winners to his credit.
At Caulfield on Saturday he will send out the early favourite Mahuta, a $4.20 chance with TAB, as one of two nominations in the Group Two P B Lawrence Stakes.
He has also entered Tall Ship ($26) in the weight-for-age contest over 1400m.
Mahuta, a first-up third behind Lord Of The Sky in the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on July 30, has a good 1400m Caulfield record.
Lord Of The Sky is the $4.60 second pick and will be having his second run at 1400m, having finished seventh in the Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington in January last year.
There are 17 nominations for the race including the Ciaron Maher-trained pair of Jameka and Set Square, Australian Cup placegetter Awesome Rock, The Cleaner and Miss Rose De Lago.
