Xtravagant has finished out of the placings in a barrier trial at Cranbourne but is on track to compete in a Group One race at Caulfield.
Ridden by Damien Oliver, Xtravagant took the lead turning for home in the 1190m trial before being throttled down over the final 200m on the heavy ground.
Co-trainer Stephen Autridge said Xtravagant was only given an easy hit-out in preparation for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
