Brave Anna causes Cheveley upset

Sunday 25 September 2016, 7:33am

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Brave Anna has won the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes in a major upset with odds-on favourite Lady Aurelia third.

It was the first time champion trainer O'Brien had won the 1200m-race for two-year-olds and he came away with the quinella when Roly Poly finished second at Newmarket on Saturday.

"It was a very competitive race and a very hard one to win. It takes a very good filly to win it," O'Brien said.

American trainer Wesley Ward could not hide his surprise at the defeat of Lady Aurelia.

"She's very fast, but it's a game humbling with big disappointments," he said.

"I had great expectations coming here. There were no excuses.

"She bounced out there and Frankie (Dettori) was bounding away in front, but when he called on her it just wasn't there the last bit.

"She's had a tough campaign.

"But ours is a special filly and hopefully we'll get home and back in the right shape and come over next year for Ascot and the Commonwealth Cup ."
