Hartnell heads Turnbull Stakes nominations

Monday 26 September 2016, 4:42pm

Hartnell headlines the nominations for the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington which will be the in-form gelding's first Melbourne appearance for the spring.

The Group One Turnbull (2000m) on Sunday has attracted 20 entries with Hartnell and last year's winner Preferment the highest-rated.

Preferment has been beaten eight lengths by Hartnell in his two Sydney starts this preparation but is a Turnbull Stakes, Australian Cup and Victoria Derby winner at Flemington.

But Hartnell's purple patch of form has him $2.25 favourite in early markets.

Ciaron Maher has Group One winners Jameka and Set Square entered but the latter also holds a nomination for Friday night's JRA Cup at Moonee Valley.

Jameka showed she was on target for the Caulfield Cup with her dominant Naturalism Stakes win last start at Caulfield.

The United States, a Group One winner of the Ranvet Stakes in Sydney during the autumn, is the $5.50 Turnbull second favourite and is high in markets for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

Saturday's Group One Underwood Stakes runner-up He Or She is entered to back up in the Turnbull having finished third in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington two starts ago.
