Dream Lane gives Mitchell 1st city winner

Saturday 19 November 2016, 6:23pm

An English trainer based in provincial NSW who served his apprenticeship in Japan has scored his first Sydney winner.

Nick Mitchell celebrated his maiden city success with Dream Lane ($10), which won the Fugen Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Dream Lane was too good for the gallant Isorich ($31), with Dark Steel ($4.20) third.

Mitchell's father Pat was a trainer at Newmarket in England.

He worked in Japanese racing for 11 years before travelling to Australia, where he worked as Tim Martin's foreman while he waited for a visa.

Mitchell has trained from Hawkesbury for three years.

He said Dream Lane could be on the way back to the Provincial Championships, where she finished fifth in this year's final.

"It's hard to tip them out on the back of this," Mitchell said.

"We've always got the option of putting her away for the Provincial Championships."

Mitchell said Christian Reith had given Dream Lane a confident ride.

"He just rode her a treat," Mitchell said.

"He let her go early, didn't panic and she just ran over the top of them."
