Valley stepping stone for Corstens stayer

Friday 20 January 2017, 1:00pm

Crediton might not have the runs on the board yet, but co-trainer Troy Corstens believes in a year's time that might be a different story.

Four-year-old Crediton is by Tavistock - sire of Derby winners Tarzino, Tavago and Werther - out of the 2000 NZ Oaks winner She's Country and Corstens believes the lightly raced gelding is a stayer on the rise.

"He should just stay all day, and he's learning all the time," Corstens said.

"I think he's going to be a really nice horse next year. But hopefully we can pick up some nice races along the way.

"I think we definitely haven't seen the best of him yet."

Crediton narrowly won a benchmark-64 race over 1950m at Yarra Valley two starts ago - his second win from eight starts - before finishing second over 2400m to Oncidium Ruler at Sandown in his first city appearance.

Connections have decided to bring him back in distance to 2040m at Moonee Valley on Saturday in the Schweppes Sparkling Handicap to give him experience at the track.

Corstens said there were a couple of 2500m races at Moonee Valley coming up which they would look to with Crediton if he handles the circuit well on Saturday.

"He's really well and obviously I think he's a lovely horse," Corstens said.

"Just to get him to where we need him to it was just easier to drop back in distance for this run and then step him out again.

"It's obviously a question mark whether the 2040 metres is going to suit, but I'm keen to get him there to have a look at the Valley and see how he handles it."

Crediton is at $7.50 behind last-start Caulfield winner Big Duke ($2.10) and Cool Chap ($4.60).
