Michael Murphy to make Saturday debut

Thursday 9 February 2017, 2:28pm

Promising apprentice Michael Murphy is set to make his Saturday Brisbane riding debut at Doomben.

The 19-year-old is indentured to former champion jockey Chris Munce and rated one of the best prospects among Queensland's provincial standard apprentices.

He will ride the Paul Facoory-trained Uno Best who is one of the favourites in Saturday's Cooper Reeves Hcp (1350m).

Murphy has had a metropolitan A licence for the past two months which has allowed him to ride on Wednesdays but not Saturdays in Brisbane.

Murphy rode his second Brisbane midweek winner on Gothic Might at Eagle Farm on Wednesday to take his career total to 64.

"I can ride at 51 (kg) and hopefully things will pick up from here. I am naturally looking forward to riding against the top jockeys in Brisbane," Murphy said.

One fan is Tim Hurley who trains Gothic Might.

"A lot of people have been following Michael's career. I am sure he will make it because one thing he does is follow instructions," Hurley said.
