Top jockey Jeff Lloyd's homework on sprinter Siegfried has helped the gelding score his first open company win at Doomben.

Lloyd held Siegfried ($3.60) up until the last possible moment before urged him to the line to beat Murt the Flirt (3.70) by three-quarters of a length in Saturday's Tox Free and MND Open (1350m).

Siegfried is trained by Toby Edmonds who has formed a lethal combination with Lloyd this season.

However, stable foreman and Edmonds' son Trent revealed few wins would have given his father more pleasure than Siegfried's victory.

"Jeff has done a lot of study to work out Siegfried who has always shown potential but not always lived up to it," Trent Edmonds said.

"He is a horse who can get up on the bit and you have to hold him up for one last run. Jeff did just that and he finished too well."

"Jeff has him worked out now and Siegfried has won two of his past three and should have won the other."

Edmonds said Siegfried would chase more open company races in the next few weeks before the winter carnival started.

"He isn't a carnival horse and these types of races are perfect for him," Edmonds said.

Lloyd was all smiles after the win and said it gave him a special kick.

"It has only taken us two years to work him out and it is finally paying dividends" he said.

Premier trainer Tony Gollan kept on track to break his own Brisbane record when Just Orm gave him his 51st metropolitan winner for the season.

Gollan, who was in Sydney for the Inglis Classic Sale, has 5-1/2 months to break the record of 87.5 he set last season.

Caloundra-based apprentice Adam Sewell continued his push into metropolitan racing when he won on the Matt Kropp-trained Marksfield ($8).

Sewell originally rode as apprentice in NSW, first with Gai Waterhouse in Sydney and then at Tamworth but has been in Queensland since August.

He scored his first Queensland metropolitan standard race win on Sahara Siren three weeks ago.

Sewell has ridden more than 70 winners but can still claim 3kg in Brisbane.

"I am starting to get the support of more trainers and I hope this leads to more winners," he said.
