Turbo Miss gets important black type win

Saturday 4 March 2017, 4:07pm

Trainer Darren Weir has a happy knack of finding suitable black type races for the fillies and mares in his stable.

His latest winner in a stakes races has come via Turbo Miss in the Group Three Frances Tressady Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

Ridden by Craig Williams, Turbo Miss ($8.50) scored a long neck win over Rising Romance ($6) with Jalan Jalan ($10) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

"She's now a broodmare with black type which is all important," Williams said.

Williams said he went out with a plan to follow the speed, but the mare was a little slow to begin.

"The barrier draw presented a great opportunity to be effective with the way the race would be run," Williams said.

"When she was slow out I had to be mindful she can be a bit keen in her races but I didn't want to give up the advantage at the same time.

"She was a little bit sticky throughout the race but when she got clear at the end she had a lot left."

Williams said Turbo Miss had felt the warm conditions at Flemington on Saturday.

He said she was reluctant to enter the barrier stalls, was grumpy in the gates, and was in a mood returning to the winner's stall after the race.

"With the heat protocol it was fantastic that chief steward Terry Bailey said get the saddle off and take her straight to hose," Williams said.

"Most importantly animal welfare comes first."
