Hong Kong record 8 winners for Moreira

Monday 6 March 2017, 7:12am

Joao Moreira has claimed yet another record, riding eight winners from 10 rides at Sha Tin .

The previous Hong Kong record was six in a day, a feat achieved by Brett Prebble, Douglas Whye and twice by Moreira.

Known as the Magic Man, Moreira has set new standards since he arrived in Hong Kong little more than three years ago, winning the past two premierships and riding a record 168 winners last season.

His haul came a day after he drew a blank at Randwick but he will be back in Australia this weekend to ride at the feature Flemington meeting.

He will be aboard Tally in the Australian Cup and Flying Artie in the Newmarket Handicap.

On his most recent visit to Melbourne, Moreira rode Sheidel to win the Group One Oakleigh Plate.

"I really don't have words to describe it, it's amazing. We know how tough it is to make it here in Hong Kong," Moreira said.

"To ride eight winners in a day here in Hong Kong is more than special."

In September 2013, Moreira rode eight winners from eight rides at Kranji in Singapore and also achieved eight winners on the card several years earlier in his native Brazil.
