Weir can build on season tally at Sandown

Tuesday 21 March 2017, 2:42pm

After notching his 100th Melbourne metropolitan win for the season with Palentino in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington, Darren Weir will continue his march towards a record season tally at Sandown.

Weir trained 106 metropolitan winners in Victoria last season, his best so far, while the record is 115 set by Lee Freedman in 2005/06.

With more than four months of the season to go, Weir looks set to easily better that mark and can edge closer at Sandown on Wednesday with runners in five of the eight races.

Three-year-old colt Scallop is on the second line of early betting for the Comcater Plate (1300m) while lightly raced four-year-old mare Gold Blush is the $2.25 favourite to make it three wins from as many starts in her city debut in the Elaren Security Services Handicap (1600m).

Rockstar Rebel is also an early favourite in the Dream Thoroughbreds Handicap while Weir has In Contempt and Sebring's Joy entered for the Ladbrokes Handicap (1000m).

Stayers Now and Zen and last-start Moonee Valley winner It's A Silvertrail are down to run in the Moorookyle Park Stud Handicap (2400m).

The ex-Weir-trained Sir Laszlo runs in that 2400m-race race as he continues his path towards a jumps debut this season for new trainer Stuart Webb.

Sir Laszlo finished equal eighth in the Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) in Adelaide last start, after which thoughts of the Adelaide Cup were scrapped and he has since had a hurdle trial at Warrnambool.

"He's fit and well and he's had a hurdle trial which was just a qualifying trial and he followed them around," Webb said.

"He'll run tomorrow and then have a solid hit-out somewhere before making his hurdle debut somewhere.

"He's not running badly on the flat but there's good money around for jumpers now and it's something where you can mix it up and do both."
