Freeze Over impresses on debut at Sandown

Wednesday 29 March 2017, 4:58pm

Two-year-old Freeze Over has done what trainer John Sadler had hoped to see at Sandown by racing to a dominant debut win.

Freeze Over stepped out in Wednesday's Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap (1000m) for two-year-old fillies and lived up to her $4.20 favouritism with a 3-1/2 length victory.

"She's a nice filly. That's what I was hoping to see," Sadler said.

Ridden by Damian Lane, Freeze Over pressed forward to take up the running and was able to kick away from the 300m mark to defeat True Excelsior with another three-quarters of a length to Artstrum.

"She did pretty much what she has done at home," Sadler said.

"When you come to the races you're always a bit nervous whether they'll put it all together and not get stage fright, but she was good.

"Damian (Lane) is riding well and I just like the way she finished the race off."

Freeze Over is by Exceed And Excel out of Big Chill and is raced by Hesket Bloodstock.

"It's my first runner for Ash Hardwick and David Moodie (of Hesket Bloodstock) and it's great to kick off with a winner," Sadler said.

"They've been very good to me in giving me two nice fillies to train, so to kick off with a winner it's great."

Sadler will consider stepping Freeze Over up to stakes company at her next start in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) for two-year-old fillies in Adelaide on Saturday week.

"I think she's got good improvement in her, this filly," Sadler said.

"We haven't seen the last of her.

"There is a nice stakes race coming up in Adelaide. It's just a little bit soon.

"It's the perfect race for her and with a filly bred as well as she is it's very important to get black type if we can. But I'll just talk to Ash and David and see how she pulls up to see whether we back her up that quickly or not."
