Doomben meeting set to go ahead

Friday 31 March 2017, 9:11am

Doomben has bounced back from a soaking and is set to host Saturday's scheduled race meeting.

Queensland stewards inspected Doomben on Friday afternoon and declared it safe for racing.

Chief steward Allan Reardon said the track had dried out considerably thanks to strong winds during the day.

"We could race today if need be. But we will put a couple of horses over it in the morning to make certain," Reardon said,

"But unless we get unscheduled rain overnight, Saturday's meeting is set to go ahead."

Doomben got about 153mm of rain on Thursday in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie which hit the north of the state and the track was saturated.

However, the rain cleared early on Friday and a strong wind blew across the course which is noted for its drying.

The Ipswich meeting set down for Friday has been transferred to Tuesday.

A feature 10-event Rockhampton meeting will be run on Saturday combining some races from Friday with the already scheduled events.
