Debonairly adds stakes victory to resume

Saturday 13 May 2017, 2:02pm

American owners Peter Fluor and KC Weiner's first venture into Australian racing has been rewarded with Debonairly winning the Listed Woodlands Stakes at Scone.

Fluor and Weiner, who operate under the Speedway Stables banner, paid $320,000 for the filly at last year's Magic Million sale.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Debonairly won her debut in December but didn't make to the $2 million Magic Millions race in January after an unplaced effort at her second start in the BJ McLachlan in Brisbane.

She returned in March for a win at Newcastle followed by a second at Randwick both times showing her inexperience by laying out.

She handled the situation a little better on Saturday, racing on the speed and getting the last crack at the leaders in the Woodlands Stakes (1100m).

Debonairly ($3.50) pounced, drawing away to beat Lipizzan ($21) with that filly's rider Deanne Panya surviving a protest from Tye Angland on $2.50 favourite Almanzora who ran fourth.

"She has always been a class filly," Bott said.

"When she went to Queensland she was a bit immature.

"She put herself on the speed today and won well."

Her jockey Tommy Berry said Debonairly still had plenty of scope to improve.

"She's still got a lot to learn," he said.

"When she got to the front she wanted to look around.

"She appreciated being on better ground than last time at Randwick."
