Tumbler to run in late winter

Sunday 21 May 2017, 2:29pm

Problem-plagued mare Tumbler is recovering well from a minor setback and should be ready to race late in the winter carnival.

Tumbler turned in the worst run of her career when she finished last in the Group Two Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on April 29.

It was the first time Tumbler had missed a place in her eight starts which have yielded six wins and a second.

After the race Tumbler was found to have a slight hoof problem, the latest in a long line of injuries which have restricted her career.

Trainer Barry Lockwood scratched Tumbler from a race at Doomben two weeks ago to give her a chance to overcome the problem.

"It is nothing major but I didn't want to risk her. She has been able to work and I think she will be ready to race later in the carnival," Lockwood said.

"I gave up making plans with horses years ago but I am confident she is better than her last start and is up to black-type company."

"She just didn't go a yard on the surface at Eagle Farm last time and the effort was well below her best."

Tumbler had won first-up running brilliant sectionals when a winner at Doomben at her previous start.

Lockwood is keen to get black-type with the five-year-old before she goes to stud.
