Cellargirl ticks black-type box at Doomben

Saturday 3 June 2017, 1:31pm

Trainer Kelly Schweida is happy to take a low-key approach with Cellargirl after her impressive first-up win in the Bill Carter Stakes at Doomben.

Cellargirl ($6) enjoyed a perfect trail in fourth spot before producing an impressive turn of foot to win by 1-3/4 lengths from Skate To Paris ($7.50) with She's Our Star ($7.50) a length away third.

Schweida doesn't want to set the bar too high for Cellargirl this campaign.

"That was a black-type race so she's ticked that box and she's not a big filly so I probably won't overtax her too much," Schweida said.

"There's plenty of upside with her. She's got a really nice pedigree but she's only a little light filly which is why I only gave her the one trial leading up to this."

Schweida is prepared to forgive Cellargirl's headstrong nature while she is performing so well.

"She wanted to bulldog to the line and that's in her nature because she's a cranky little thing," he said.

"I ran her in the Magic Millions last time in but she was probably over the top by then but it's good to see her win like she did today.

"I'm not sure how far she'll get as far as a trip is concerned but there's a few of these two-year-old races coming up that she can run in."

Orman was pleased to put another black-type win on the board with his first ride on Saturday, following on from Niccanova's victory in the Group Three Fred Best Classic at Eagle Farm a week earlier.
