Norzita favoured in first Epsom Hcp market

Friday 30 August 2013, 4:06pm

Top-class mare Norzita, favourite in first markets to win the Epsom Handicap, is an unlikely runner in the famous spring mile.

A two-time Group One winner and a Doncaster Mile placegetter as an autumn three-year-old, Norzita heads the TAB's opening Epsom market at $8.

But Duncan Ramage, who manages the bloodstock interests of Norzita's owner Dato Tan Chin Nam, said the four-year-old was not expected to race in Sydney beyond the George Main Stakes.

"The Cox Plate is her main spring goal and she'll more than likely head to Melbourne after the George Main," Ramage said.

Norzita resumed in eye-catching form when placed behind Rebel Dane in the Show County Quality at Warwick Farm last week.

Streama, the Epsom second pick at $9, returned on the same card to be beaten narrowly in the Warwick Stakes.

Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Falls shares the third line of Epsom betting with the Queen's horse Carlton House at $10.

In first markets on the Metropolitan, stayers from the Chris Waller yard dominate.

Waller horses occupy the top five lines of betting, headed by $9 equal favourites Beaten Up and Royal Descent.

Bayrir, scheduled to have his second Australian start for Waller in the Chelmsford Stakes next week, is at $11 with Queensland Derby-winning stablemate Hawkspur at $13.

Epsom and Metropolitan weights will be released on September 16 with both races run at Randwick on October 5.
