A two-year-old colt is proving to be the exception to how trainer Leon Davies usually approaches his work with horses.
Crooked Blaze will make his debut at Randwick on Saturday in the Sharp Plate (1000m) after a solid grounding at Davies' Tamworth stable where he has been in work since January.
"I haven't had a lot of two-year-old starters," Davies said.
But Crooked Blaze's form in barrier trials has impressed Davies who has decided to take him to the races early.
"I tend to give them plenty of time but he put his hand up this year and he's handled the work well," he said.
A $25,000 yearling from the Inglis Summer Classic sale, Crooked Blaze's temperament is unlike most horses his age that Davies has prepared.
"Two-year-old colts can always play around here or there, but he's really good around the stables," he said.
The trainer is also buoyed by Crooked Blaze's performances in his trials in which he finished first and second at MuswellBrook and Randwick respectively.
The two-year-old seemed unfazed by those experiences or the travel involved.
"He's like a little lamb, he handled it really well," Davies said.
But Crooked Blaze could be a wolf in sheep's clothing in Saturday's race under jockey Blake Shinn, according to Davies.
"At this stage, I wouldn't be trading my colt for anyone else in the race," he said.
All going well, Davies plans to target the Inglis bonus races in the summer with Crooked Blaze.
