Tiny mare Tale Of The Dragon overcame a pre-race drama before cementing trainer Rob Heathcote's relationship with one of Australian racing's most famous owners at Doomben on Wednesday.
Tale Of The Dragon is owned by Dato Tan Chin Nam whose colours have been carried to victory by hundreds of horses including Melbourne Cup winners Saintly and Viewed.
One thing is for certain, Tale Of The Dragon is no Saintly or Viewed but Heathcote hopes he can get some more staying-race wins out of the mare.
Tale Of The Dragon was bred at Think Big Stud, being by noted staying sire Pendragon out the former handy mare Authoress.
Starting at $5, Tale Of The Dragon came from midfield to beat the favourite Zips A Daisy ($2.10) by a length with two lengths to Whispering Tess ($4.40) in third in the McGrath Estate Agents Maiden Plate (2150m).
However, Tale Of The Dragon nearly didn't make it to the starting stalls.
She flipped over backwards in the saddling enclosure and had to be passed fit to race by the course vet Martin Lenz.
"She was with John O'Shea in Sydney but he sacked her," Heathcote said.
"She is only tiny and the stud were keen for us to get a win out of her because she is so well bred.
"We've managed to get a city win out of her and who knows we might get a few more."
Heathcote has had several horses from Think Big Stud including the handy That's Karma.
"They seem keen to send some more so I hope the win today cemented things," Heathcote said.
Jockey Ryan Wiggins said Tale Of The Dragon raced like a true stayer.
