Cup hero shines in Flemington work gallop

Saturday 15 February 2014, 1:36pm

The best of two worlds went on display at Flemington on Saturday - and there was little between them.

Fiorente, the Melbourne Cup winner, and Bull Point, the Australian Guineas favourite, had a between-races gallop that is likely to have increased their fan base.

With the pressure on over the final 800m, the pair strode comfortably down the straight, reaching the line with Bull Point on the inside doing slightly the better.

The horses that span the generations of the Gai Waterhouse stable both came through their work in good order, satisfying jockey Damien Oliver who rode Fiorente in the gallop but will be on both of them on race day.

"They're both in great order, they both went super," Oliver said.

"Bull Point as you'd expect is close to his top and Fiorente hasn't raced yet, so there was a lot take out from both of them."

Fiorente is scheduled to return to racing at Caulfield next Saturday and Bull Point is a possible runner in the Futurity Stakes at the same meeting with the Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 1 his next target.

Chad Schofield, who handled Bull Point in the Flemington gallop, said the colt had done well to match strides with a classy older horse like Fiorente.

"My horse had the fitness edge, but Fiorente is a proven top-class horse, so it was a good effort by both of them," Schofield said.
