Samarmeteors in first start for Webster

Samarmeteors' value in the breeding barn is assured but her new trainer Pat Webster hopes she can delay motherhood by performing well on the track.

The lightly raced mare has her first start for Webster in an 1100-metre race at Canterbury on Wednesday which will be a guide to her future.

Owned by Gerry Harvey, Samarmeteors is a half-sister to Group One winner Samaready.

"Like all Gerry's fillies and mares at this time of year, she is on trial," Webster said.

"If she doesn't aim up she will be going to stud. We have until the beginning of September to test whether that is the case.

"Being by Northern Meteor and a half-sister to a Group One winner she is obviously worth a lot of money.

"She is a beautiful horse. She is really petite and is the happiest little thing around the stable I've ever seen.

"I was pleased with her barrier trial but I just wish she had drawn a better alley for her race."

Samarmeteors drew barrier 11 in the field of 14 plus four emergencies for the Ranvet Handicap with just two of the reserves drawn inside her.

Mitchell Bell rode her to third in a barrier trial at Randwick on July 18 with Jason Collett to take the ride at Canterbury.

Samarmeteors had three starts for Mick Price in Melbourne for a win and two seconds before a setback prompted a lengthy spell.

"I've watched her races in Melbourne and she did lead in those," Webster said.

"That's why I would have preferred a better barrier but Jason is a good rider and hopefully he can get her across into a good position.

"She has had no trouble with the Sydney direction and I'm hoping she can perform well and maybe keep racing."

The mare's Testa Rossa sister, the Price-trained Samartested, broke her maiden at Geelong last Friday at her second start.
