Peter Snowden and Michael Hawkes are not renowned for talking up their horses but both were looking towards future racing carnivals following the wins of Diamond Valores and Lady Sharapova at Canterbury.
Snowden sent Diamond Valores to the races on Wednesday knowing the three-year-old had ability but lacked race sense.
It was his talent that shone through at the finish when he picked up late to take out the TAB Early Quaddie Handicap by a short neck over Double Happy with favourite Burning Passion another half head away third.
"I'm rapt with that. He's shown us a lot of ability at home but he's very raw and very new," Snowden said.
"This horse is no slouch. He's always shown me nice ability but lacked race savvy. In the run he was on the bit, off the bit and got held up and I thought he lost a lot of momentum there.
"He didn't know what to do when he got out but he still got over the top of them."
Diamond Valores is superbly bred on his dam's side being from the same family as Don Eduardo, Tristalove and Peruzzi.
Snowden will adopt a patient approach with Diamond Valores which he hopes will reap rewards during the autumn and winter carnivals next year.
"He's too new for the nice races this preparation," Snowden said.
Hawkes was similarly buoyant after Lady Sharapova broke her maiden at start number three in Theraces.com.au Handicap, justifying the stable's decision to bypass Saturday's Listed The Rosebud in favour of Canterbury.
An $800,000 yearling, Lady Sharapova is by Fastnet Rock out of Perfect Persuasion, a full sister to multiple Group One winner Alinghi.
Stakes placed in Melbourne in February, Lady Sharapova was having her first start since she failed to handle a heavy track when sixth to subsequent Golden Slipper placegetter Bring Me The Maid in the Magic Night Stakes.
"We had her in Saturday in a stakes race but we elected to come here," Hawkes said.
"We wanted to get a win under her belt.
"It's onwards and upwards. She's a really nice filly going forward."
In what promises to be a nice form race, Lady Sharapova had a length to spare over Twirl, a two-time stakes placegetter as a juvenile.
