I headed to the Hunter Valley on Friday and spent the day inspecting our horses at Ellalong Farm as well as visiting Yarraman, Edinglassie and Patinack Farms.
This was a very good visit and I got a good insight to some of the progeny of the new sires we will see with yearlings on offer next year. This gives me a much clearer picture of what will be available. As is normally the case up to 50 new sires will have yearlings on offer next year and it pays to sort them out early rather than later when the yearlings turn up at the sales looking beautiful.
The 2014/15 Season kicked off in fine style with our first runner Rumeron scoring a terrific win at Devonport. Rumeron had displayed nice potential as a two year old being placed 2nd in the Tasmanian Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic. Like so many of the progeny of Murtajill she has started to mature both physically and mentally as she headed towards her three year old year. She was very good at Devonport and very well ridden by apprentice Ismael Toker. She is trained by the partnership of Charlie Goggin and Leuella Meaburn.
We have had remarkable success with initially Charlie and now Charlie in partnership with his daughter Leuella, training our horses. In total I have syndicated 30 horses to race in Tasmania since 2006 when we started operating in the Apple Isle with Rumeron being our 23rd individual winner. Unfortunately, one colt had to be put down after a paddock accident. Charlie has managed to get the remaining 29 to the races with 23 having won (79.3% winners). In an industry where only about 50% of horses get to race and 15% win a race these figures are exceptional.
Our other runners for the new season were Terra Amata who wasn’t given the best of rides by Hugh Bowman finishing 6th at Rosehill, Chief Lord beaten a lip into 2nd place at Tamworth and Awasita was a close up 3rd at Sandown on resuming from a spell which was a pleasing result. All in all a good start to the 2014/15 Season.
