Promising three-year-old Lucky Tom took the first step to the Melbourne spring carnival with an impressive barrier trial win at Deagon on Tuesday.
Ridden by race jockey Rikki Jameison, Lucky Tom was too slick for another top Queensland galloper in Teronado, beating him by 1-1/2 lengths in a 1000-metre trial.
Lucky Tom ran 60.9secs, coming home the last 600m in 34.14secs.
Trainer Harold Norman was happy with the trial and declared everything ready for Lucky Tom's return to racing in a three-year-old handicap at Doomben on August 23.
"I will then have to make up my mind about what to do with him. I can run him again in Brisbane or go to Sydney on the way to Melbourne," Norman said.
"He is booked in to the stables in Melbourne from September 16. But the first race we have in mind for him in Melbourne is the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (on September 28).
"If we went straight to Melbourne it would mean five weeks between runs."
Lucky Tom is being aimed at the Group One double of the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11 and the Cox Plate (2040m) two weeks later.
Norman is adamant Lucky Tom will be right up with the best three-year-olds in the spring.
"I keep telling you this is a very good horse. We haven't seen anywhere near the best of him in a race just yet," Norman said.
Lucky Tom has not run since leading all the way in the Listed Phoenix Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.
