Michael Cahill hungry to reclaim title

Thursday 28 August 2014, 12:34pm

A refreshed Michael Cahill has returned from a holiday eager to reclaim the Brisbane jockeys' premiership this season.

Cahill won the title in 2012-13 but after establishing a big lead last season, he was run down by young gun Tim Bell in a battle which was only determined on the final day of the racing term.

It was still a good year for Cahill who rode 109 winners overall, 56 of those in Brisbane.

Cahill and his family subsequently enjoyed a short break in Thailand, returning earlier this week in preparation for the jockey's three rides at Doomben.

"It was something a bit different and it really helped me to freshen up for the new season," Cahill said.

"I will ease my way back on Saturday with a couple of rides and then it will be back to full business."

Cahill's major chance on Saturday will be three-year-old filly Dansolei who he partnered to an unlucky third at her only start on August 6.

"Apparently she trialled well while I was away so I am pleased to retain the ride," he said.

Cahill added he had no commitments for the southern spring races at this stage but would be happy to head interstate for the right horse.

"I will be concentrating on Brisbane but of course if something comes up I will have to consider it," he said.

"But it isn't much use going to those carnivals unless you have firm bookings for genuine chances."

Meanwhile, trainer Brian Smith is also expected back from holidays this week to oversee the next step in the spring campaigns of his smart gallopers Kingdoms and Jetset Lad.

Kingdoms is being set for the Metropolitan Handicap while Jetset Lad is in the mix for the Epsom Handicap, both held at Randwick on October 4.

Jetset Lad and Kingdoms haven't raced since their one-two finish in the Tattersall's Mile on July 12 but the pair stepped up preparations for their returns with barrier trials at Eagle Farm last week.
