Vic mare Esprit's Choice chases wet track

Thursday 28 August 2014, 2:46pm

Four-time Golden Slipper winner Clarry Conners and his trainer-son Heath have decided to head in different directions - for this weekend at least.

While Clarry Conners has opted to dodge the wet tracks in Sydney and run Dear Demi in Melbourne, Victorian-based Heath Conners has sent Esprit's Choice north in search of soft ground at Rosehill.

The mare will make her Sydney debut in the Cellarbrations Handicap (1100m) and her trainer is quietly confident she can enhance her wet-track record.

"Her form on the soft is terrific," Conners said.

"Put her on a soft track and with no weight on her back, it puts her in the race."

The formlines around Esprit's Choice have also given Conners reason to be optimistic.

She was runner-up to subsequent Winter Championship winner Akavaroun on a heavy track in April before a narrow second at Geelong to Big Buddie, a city winner at his next start.

The mare has been unplaced in two runs since a let-up, most recently when she was outclassed by Gregers in a strong race at Caulfield.

But the stable also discovered a back issue which it hopes has since been fixed.

"The form is all there. I (now) know the reasons for her last couple of runs and hopefully I'm on top of that," Conners said.

"We trialled her and she was fairly dominant in her trial at Geelong over 1000 metres so hopefully the wet track will make the difference."

Esprit's Choice is a $23 chance in early markets which are headed by Hawkes Racing's Maroon Bay.
