The prospect of missing a start in a Listed race has prompted connections of Late Charge to consider a much tougher Flemington assignment.
Late Charge is among a field of 11 for Saturday's Group One Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) while he is second emergency for the Listed Sofitel (1400m).
A narrow first-up winner of a benchmark race at Caulfield, Late Charge is one of the outsiders in early betting for the weight-for-age feature at $31.
Trainer Wendy Kelly said the Listed race was the original plan until she discovered Late Charge was 26th in the ballot order when nominations were released.
"They extended the nominations for the Makybe Diva so on the back of the thought that he may not get a run in the Sofitel, we thought we'd throw a nomination in there," Kelly said.
"At the moment he's got a run in the Makybe and that's basically what we are working towards."
Late Charge was unplaced in two Group One races against his own age as a three-year-old.
Kelly said the horse had no luck during a three-start autumn campaign which included a Group Two placing and she was delighted with his first-up win.
"His first-up run was enormous and he pulled up super from the run," Kelly said.
"I'm really happy with him, whichever race he goes into."
