Brisbane trainer Bryan Dais is on weather watch as he prepares smart three-year-old Soldi Domani for spring carnival action.
Soldi Domani will confirm a start in the Group One Caulfield Guineas on October 11 if he races well in the PFD Food Services Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.
But a lead-up race for Soldi Domani is still undecided with Dais keen to stop over in Sydney on his way to Melbourne.
"The race we would like to chase in Sydney is the Stan Fox Stakes," Dais said.
"It is a perfect lead up for him and would break up the trip south.
"But that is all depending on the Sydney weather. It is an understatement to say it has been wet there and we saw that Soldi Domani hates soft tracks two runs back."
A Caulfield Guineas Prelude in Melbourne is the back-up plan for Soldi Domani.
Soldi Domani cost $52,500 at a ready-to-run sale last year but has taken time to mature.
The gelding is a prime example of Dais's policy of giving his horses time to grow.
"I have been training for about five years now in my own right and it is a tough slog." he said.
"It is not a matter of having a top-class horse but even getting Saturday-class horses.
"I have been lucky that in recent years I have had owners who are willing to let me give horses time.
"Soldi Domani was set to race in March and we thought he was a winter carnival hope.
"But in the end he wasn't exactly right so we gave him some extra time and it is paying off."
Dais is a New Zealander who worked for many years with the famous trainers Dave and Paul O'Sullivan, strapping their Cox Plate winner Surfers Paradise.
"I also had a stint in Japan and then came to Brisbane in 2000 to work with Rob Heathcote who has been a great help," he said.
