Jockeys, trainers vie for spring honours

Thursday 11 September 2014, 2:01pm

The leading jockey and trainer during the Melbourne carnival will earn themselves a significant bonus following the creation of spring racing premierships.

Announced on Thursday, the premierships will be awarded to the trainer and jockey who accumulate the most points over 16 feature during of the Melbourne spring carnival.

The premier spring jockey and premier spring trainer will win $25,000 as well as having $25,000 donated to their nominated charity.

There are 10 charities involved in the promotion.

The premierships start with Saturday's Makybe Diva Stakes day at Flemington and run until Sandown Guineas day.

Points are allocated on a 3-2-1 basis for all races at the nominated meetings except for Group One races and the Group Two Zipping Classic.

Group One races and the Zipping Classic will have points of 6-4-2 for first, second and third, while the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, and Caulfield Cup will have a points allocation of 12-4-2.

Champion jockey Glen Boss applauded the concept.

"As jockeys we go out there and try to compete at our top level in every race," he said.

"But to have this little extra incentive, and knowing that you are doing it for charity at the end of the day is a wonderful concept and I'm really glad to be involved," he said.

The TAB has installed Damien Oliver and Craig Williams joint favourites to win the jockeys' premiership at $3.50 ahead of Boss and Luke Nolen at $6.

The training partnership of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig share the top line of betting for the trainers' award with Darren Weir and Peter Moody at $4 and Chris Waller at $4.60.
